What is sleep coaching?
Unfortunately, the term 'sleep coaching' has taken on a negative connotation for some. In reality, it is about instilling healthy sleep habits in your baby that will benefit your child for the rest of his or her life. Sleep is a skill you can learn. And sleep coaching is nothing but teaching your child a new skill and habits (and unlearning old ones) so that he or she sleeps better. You give the body the opportunity to rest, instead of being overtired by all that disturbed sleep.
With sleep coaching, you will, among other things, ensure that your child gets into a proper day and night rhythm, appropriate to their age and sleep needs. Children love rhythm and regularity, so this is also covered extensively during our coaching
What is important to know, however, is that the success of sleep coaching hinges on execution. That is why we share our most important tips.
😴 Stay consistent.
During coaching, we introduce many things that help your child sleep, including the way your child falls asleep, schedule, routine etc. Stay consistent, children pick up the new in no time, provided it is implemented consistently! Children need boundaries and clarity, it makes them feel safe.
😴 Be patient.
Change takes time! We break old habits, build new ones and help your child go from overtired to rested. It is a process; change will not happen overnight, so hang in there and give it time! Depending on the age and your specific situation, it may take a little longer or shorter before you see results. After 2 weeks, 95% of parents see a significant improvement in their child's sleep.
😴 At the right time.
If you do sleep training, it is important to do it with full focus and attention, so if there are a lot of other things going on, it is better to wait a while. Think of a move, the arrival of a brother/sister, a holiday, etc. Too much change at once actually has the opposite effect so plan it at a quiet time.
😴 Make sure everyone is on board.
It is important that the parents are on the same page regarding the process and goals. Choose the solution you both agree on, so that you can work on it together and see progress. Really do it together, agree on who takes turns and alternate nights. Motivate and support each other!
😴 Ask for help.
If you feel like you don't know where to start or aren't sure how to do it, we recommend you ask for help and do it with a Children's Sleep Coach.
